Sophia Susanna Yoo, Violin,

Young Musicians Competition Winner 2014

Sophia is a fifteen-year-old homeschooled student, who loves music. She has been studying violin since the age of four, and is currently a student of Lee Snyder at Settlement Music School, where she performs regularly at various branches of the school. She has also been studying piano and harp for eight and five years, respectively.

Her music accomplishments and awards include: Advanced Study Scholarship recipient with the Ann Newman Quartet coached by Mr. Sidney Curtiss; prizes in both the Tri-County Youth Festival and Bucks County Youth Competition, 2013; first prize in the junior harp division, the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Harp Society, 2010; recipient of an Eckfeldt Family scholarship, Settlement Music School, since 2010. After receiving a scholarship from a Korean youth orchestra in Washington, D.C. in 2011, Sophia served as their concert master in spring and summer of 2012 performing in a series of concerts.

She is actively involved in community concerts and events with her four passionately musical siblings as the Joyful Sound of Music Ministry.

Aside from her committed involvement with music, Sophia finds time to devote to her other studies in school: chemistry, trigonometry, and ancient world history. In her spare time, she enjoys composing music, writing stories, reading and spending time with family and friends. She is also training to become ambidextrous—to be capable of writing skillfully with both right and left hands.

Sophia adds, “In the very near future, I hope to take music to the next level, and it is my dream to use music and my violin to empower and enrich the lives of others in our community. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to be able to perform with a professional chamber orchestra.”
